Curly Dock Weed Control
Managing curly dock growth can be difficult. The seeds travel for miles through the water and wind, which can mean germination further than you would initially expect. Seeds can also remain viable for 20 years, and in some extremely cases for 50 years. It’s important to take the following steps to help control the growth and spread of the weed.
Mechanical Curly Dock Weed Control
The most effective option is to remove the weed mechanically. This isn’t as easy by hand, as the roots are extremely deep. Most of the plants will break off before pulling the full root out and this can lead to regeneration. You can use a shovel to cut the plant at least 2 inches below the soil surface. This gets enough of the plant to prevent the regeneration. Mowing has show effectiveness, if you can get a mower into the area. Because of the preferred moist habitat, it’s extremely difficult to do this.
If you opt for mechanical options, you’ll want to hire a professional to ensure it’s done properly.
Herbicides Are Most Effective
The easiest form of curly dock weed control is through herbicides. There are a number of chemical options available that will not affect the growth of the grass in the ear or affect other plants. Getting the timing right is important and you’ll want to get the right type of herbicide for your exact area. Some are better than others for working within watery areas. 2,4-D is one of the most effective when there is no soil activity. There are aquatic versions of it. It’s not effective in temperatures over 80F, though.
Avoid Grazing Treatments
There are no known bug species that will eat the plants. Also, having livestock graze on the weed isn’t safe. Curly dock is poisonous in large amounts due to the soluble oxalates in the plant. You can also find that the growth increases due to grazing.
