Emerald Ash Borer

Even when we care for our trees (pruning, deep watering and preventative spraying), we feel helpless when a pest infestation occurs. There’s nothing we can do. New diseases and pest infestations travel rapidly around the world. It happens in ships’ cargo, passengers’ bags from places where trees have natural resistance to them to areas where trees have never been exposed to them and are extremely vulnerable. This is the case of the Emerald Ash Borer (Agrilus planipennis, Fairmare) affecting ash species in Colorado. It killed 50 million ash trees in over 20 states. It was confirmed to be present in the City of Boulder on September 27, 2013. Emerald ash borer is currently under Federal and State Quarantine. Quarantine is one of the methods of controlling emerald ash borer.

Quarantine in Boulder County

To facilitate containment and the way of controlling of emerald ash borer, the Colorado Department of Agriculture has enacted a quarantine of Boulder, including two landfills in Erie, CO, the entire Town of Erie, a wood containment area in Meeker Park and the Republic Landfill on Highway 93 South of Boulder.

If you live in the quarantine area and you have tree work done on your ash (dead or alive), make sure tree service company follow the restrictions set up by the CDA.

Controlling emerald ash borer

You should take this quarantine very seriously and there are a lot of trees at stake, only in Denver area alone there are over 1.5 million ash trees. It will be devastating if this infestation continues to other areas.
