Emerald ash borer treatment consists of the following solutions:
- Setting up and enforcing quarantines
- Killing beetles
- Destroying ash trees
Quarantines are used to prevent the spread of a pest from a limited area. Quarantines prohibit movement of certain materials out of an area. After discovering the emerald ash borer in the city of Boulder on September, 2013 CDA has enacted quarantine for Boulder County.
Killing the emerald ash borers usually involves injecting chemicals into the ground near an ash tree. The tree roots draw up the chemicals from the ground and they are transported up the tree to the branches and leaves. When the larvae are feeding inside the tree, they also take in the chemicals and die.
Another method of fighting the emerald ash borer is burning ash trees. It includes figuring out the affected area and determines a line where the infested trees and healthy trees start. After that all the healthy ash trees in a wide path outside that line are burned. The ash borers inside the line have nowhere to go (the emerald ash borer can only fly about 0.5 mile) and die.
The best way to control emerald ash borer is to use several methods at once. If you have ash trees, you need to think about prevention. Make sure your trees are healthy and do any necessary pruning of dead, broken or disease branches. A trunk injection done in spring is practiced within a 15-mile radius of any confirmed emerald ash borer presence. Outside this line a soil injection in fall is practiced. Additional recommendation may also include deep watering, deep root fertilizing for trees and shrubs, tree spraying.
