White Pine Weevil Treatment
They’re one of the most destructive tree pests known. From birth to death the white pine weevil chews and eats its way through various sections and levels of Colorado blue and Engelmann spruces. Because of the multiple ways a weevil uses a blue spruce during its life cycle, a multi-step approach is necessary for white pine weevil treatment.
White pine weevil treatment options:
The first step is usually conducted in the spring, before over-wintering adult females can lay eggs and when both male and females begin their post-winter feasting on the white pines. A first application of insecticide for white pine weevil treatment is recommended when the temperature reaches about 70 degrees F. A second application is recommended two weeks later.
Additional applications for white pine weevil treatment applied at the top of the tree may be necessary and are recommended when any matured adults (that survived the first two applications of insecticide) emerge from their wood chip cocoons during mid-summer. For the most part, weevils stay put and will continue to feed on the tree where they were conceived and incubated.
A soil treatment may also be necessary in order to reduce the amount of damage or injury the weevils do to a tree. The soil-applied insecticide is absorbed through the tree’s roots, killing adult weevils as they eat the tree, shortening the weevils’ lifespan and therefore reducing the damage they can do.
There is also a very brief pruning window in late spring/early summer when damaged branches that contain emerging weevils can be removed. Chemical application combined with pruning gives the best results.
