Trees are important in the world. Yet, over time, a lot of the world’s forests have been removed. It’s up to us to start adding more trees to our local area, and you’ll want to add some trees to your garden.
Trees are great for improving air quality. You also get homes for squirrels, birds, and lots of other wildlife, and with healthy trees, you can actually help to reduce the spread of wildfires. Here are the top tips for planting trees in your yard.
The first thing you’ll need to do is check in with your utility company. Call 811 to find out where the power lines and pipes run underground so you don’t accidentally cause damage.
Get the Right Hole Size
You want to make sure you dig a hole that is 2-3 times the diameter of the root of the tree. You’ll usually get this as a root ball, making it easy to replant. Don’t go any deeper than the root ball. The roots will work their way through the ground as they grow.
If you get a balled-and-burlap tree, you’ll need to remove the bottom part of the wire basket. Watch out for damaging the root ball with the basket as you place the ball into the ground. You can then remove the top of the wire basket once the ball is in the ground and remove the burlap off the roots.
Mulch the Trees
You’ll need to use some mulch on the top. Opt for organic mulch that is not more than 3-4 inches deep. You don’t want to put this all the way to the trunk. Keep it about 3-6 inches away from the trunk to protect the roots and avoid damage. The mulch will help to reduce the growth of weeds around the trees, meaning less damage from pulling the weeds or using lawnmowers.
Use a Stake If Needed
There are times that new trees will need a stake. This helps to stabilize the trunk, especially if you’re in an area with strong winds.
You’ll still want some ability for the trunk to sway, though. If things are too rigid, the entire system is going to fall down. Make sure the stakes are tied to the trunk with wide strap and not wire to protect the trunk from damage.
