In the recent years Colorado is facing more drought conditions than ever before. This is putting a stress on the ecosystem around us, and it’s up to us as humans to help our trees.
During drought conditions, there are limitations on the water that you can use. When you do have supplemental water, you’ll want to use it for the trees. Healthy trees are good for air quality, for the wildlife around us, and for reducing the risk of wildfires.
Here are the top tips for watering the trees during drought conditions.
Use Organic Mulch Around the Tree Bases
Like in the winter, you want to get mulch. This is one of the best ways to ensure soil maintains its moisture even in the coldest or hottest of conditions. It’s one of the most inexpensive options, and you can even make your own!
Place mulch that’s around 4-inches thick around the base of the tree. Keep it a couple of feet away from the trunk and remove any grass that has grown around the base.
Water Wide and Slowly
The roots of the tree will spread much further out than you would initially think. You’ll need to make sure you water as far out as possible. Look at where the branches reach out to. This is an indication of where the root system spreads. Make sure the tips of the roots get as much water as the base of the roots for the best nourishment.
Don’t just quickly pour a load of water over the area. You need to water slowly to make sure the soil has time to soak it all in. The roots will run deep, and you want to make sure the deeper levels of soil get as much water as needed. You can use a deep root fork that’s abut 8 inches or less to help with the slow watering.
Make Sure the Grass is Green
If your trees are in a garden, you may not need to water the actual trees as much during drought conditions. You’ll need to make sure the grass is green. This will mean that the soil is getting plenty of water, so the roots of the trees are also getting adequate nutrition.
The issue is when the grass is yellow. This means that the soil is dry, so your trees are also dry. You’ll need to get to work to repair the damage.
When you are focusing on the trees, make sure you water the newly planted ones and the seedlings more frequently than the grown ones. They will have smaller roots systems that become more stressed in drought conditions.
