Keeping trees healthy is more than just making sure it gets adequate sunlight and water. The initial years will affect everything about your tree in the later years. There are also steps you’ll need to take to prevent pest infestations. Here is everything you need to know to keep trees healthy:
Getting a healthy tree starts from the moment you select it. Always take time to inspect a tree, whether you’re picking it up from the nursery or getting it delivered. The exact signs of a good tree will depend on the way the tree is delivered.
• If the roots are bare, you want them in a good color, moist, and fibrous.
• Balled & burlapped roots should be firm to touch and look in proportion to the tree
• If potted, you want to avoid those that circle the pots or those that are cut cleanly and pruned too much
Mulch is necessary. It insulates your soil and retains more water than normal soil, helping to keep your roots moist. It can also help to prevent weed growth, minimizing the competition for the roots.
New trees will need watering immediately after planting and then regularly throughout the first two years. This is when most of the root growth takes place. Spend 30s with a steady stream of water on the tree and you have just the right amount of water. After the first two years, you’ll still want to water now and then but the tree can withstand more inconsistent conditions.
Part of keeping trees healthy is to prune regularly. You’ll be set for a beautiful bit of greenery in your garden.
