Flatheaded appletree borer is a serious pest of various deciduous trees. When left unchecked, it can cause a significant damage to important hosts.
Cultural Control: Keep your trees healthy and vigorous.
Make sure that you plant non-infested stock. You may find that part of the bark is darkened and that there are bits of sawdust coming out of the bark. Avoid tree injuries that may encourage an attack, and this includes mechanical injuries, fire and even wind and cultivation.Protect your trees from sunscald. You can do this by painting with white paint that is latex based. Of course, the adults do tend to lay eggs on the sunnier side of the tree as well so it would be a good idea to keep younger trees more shaded when compared to the other plants that you have in your garden. If you want to avoid an attack then opt for more vigorous plants and do your best to maintain their health by watering, fertilizing, pruning, and preventive tree spraying. Remove and destroy the infested trees.
Biological control: natural predators can help with flatheaded appletree borer control.
Chemical control: tree spraying.
