Noxious weeds are certainly a problem, but not a problem that isn’t fixable. There are control measures that are used every year to keep the weeds from taking over. Everyone should have some sort of weed management plan since it is virtually impossible to get rid of them completely.
There are four methods for controlling noxious weeds. You can use some of these methods together, or you can opt for them alone. It’s going to depend on the location of the weeds and the type of space you have.
Cultivate the Growth of Desirable Plants
Weeds will often take over an area and prevent the desirable plants from growing. You can work on forcing the opposite to happen. With good fertilization and irrigation methods, you can help the more desirable plants to grow.
Right now, the weeds take over because they take all the nutrients in the ground from the desirable plants. With a lot of TLC, you’ll be able to force the opposite to happen. Make sure the desirable plants get the nutrients, and you’ll be able to force the noxious weeds out of the area.
This is the oldest method of control.
Disrupt the Growth of Noxious Weeds
While you’re helping the desirable plants grow, you can also make it much harder for the noxious weeds by disrupting their growth. This is done through mowing, pulling, and hoeing the areas. You’ll want to seal and get rid of the weeds afterward to prevent even the smallest seed from getting away.
You could even allow some wildlife in the area to manage the problem. For example, sheep and goats are popular for managing weed growth. In this case, you won’t get the desirable plants, though. The sheep and goats will eat everything they can!
Opt for Herbicides
You can spray herbicides onto the noxious weeds. This will help to disrupt their growth, making it harder for them to get the nutrients they need to grow.
It is possible to use this method while growing desirable plants. You’ll want to keep an eye on where the herbicides are being sprayed to avoid the good plants that you want to grow. Always read the labels and follow instruction swhen using them.
Biological Controls for Noxious Weeds
There are a few biological controls out there. However, they can be tricky and dangerous, so you’ll need to get a professional out to manage this for the safety of all. You’ll usually find that the controls are only done every three to five years, which can mean a slower process.
In many cases, you can do the biological controls with other methods of controlling noxious weeds. It’s best to start with the desirable plants while waiting for a professional to look at the problem.
